UPDATE 8:45 a.m. - President Barack Obama canceled his trip to Interstate Moving Services, according to the White House. He will instead meet with industry officials Tuesday at the White House.
Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama will head to a major moving company in the suburbs of the nation's capital Tuesday to announce new fuel efficiency standards for trucks, buses and heavy duty vehicles.
Sounds like a typical backdrop for a president to announce new transportation standards. Or is it?
Here's the thing: The location, Interstate Moving Services in Springfield, Virginia, has become the spot where Republican candidates rally on the last weekend before elections.
In 2009 Virginia's statewide GOP candidates appeared at Interstate just days before they swept the election, including winning back the governor's office from the Democrats.
One year earlier Sen. John McCain and then Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican presidential and vice presidential nominees, held a rally at Interstate the weekend before the 2008 presidential election. The GOP didn't fare as well in that contest. Republican statewide candidates also held events at the location in the days before the 2005 and 2006 elections.
A spokesperson for the company says Interstate opens its facility to both political parties, other organizations and non-profits, to hold events as a way of reaching out to the community, regardless of party affiliation.
