Biofuel company moving HQ to suburban Philly - BusinessWeek

Gov. Tom Corbett traveled to suburban Philadelphia on Tuesday to welcome a biomass energy company that plans to move its headquarters from Georgia and create 150 jobs over the next three years as it tries to develop ways to turn products such as wood and waste into fuel.

Venture capitalist John Doerr moderated a discussion of alternative energy inside the warehouse building that Renmatix -- which has another facility in Kennesaw, Ga. -- will be calling home.

The company is developing ways to access the fermentable sugars that are the foundation of biofuels. The effort, along with other alternative energy efforts, are all part of helping the country become less dependent on foreign oil, Doerr said.

"Sugar is the next crude, the new crude," Doerr said. "Done right, this can revitalize the American economy."

The company's move, the development of natural gas drilling in the state and new wind and solar energy projects show that Pennsylvania is becoming a center of energy development, said Corbett, a first-term Republican.

Renmatix's processes, which use water to access sugars from biofuels, are an innovative part of finding new ways to create energy, Corbett said.

If Renmatix creates the number of jobs anticipated, the company will receive a total of $1.9 million in loans, tax credits and grants for the project, said Steve Kratz, a spokesman for the Department of Community and Economic Development.

2010 . . . 8.9%

Corporate Taxes as a Percentage of GDP

1955 . . . 4.3%

Every CEO in the country needs to remove the word ?uncertainty? from their vocabulary. It is a non-specific word that might mean anything, in the way that the word ?discomfort? could describe the kind of pain you feel when you have a cramp in your leg or the kind of pain you feel when you have a broken neck. In CEO speak, ?uncertainty? is a word that is usually delivered in an ominous tone when they are being interviewed, because we all know that CEO?s are being paid millions of dollars a year to assemble successful business strategies as simply and easily as kids snap together Legos.

What I do know with certainty is that the Coca Cola Co PAC has made its own contribution to congressional gridlock. According to Open Secrets, some of the Coca Cola PAC?s larger contributions during the 2010 election cycle were to the three in Congress most responsible for our current inability to get anything done. Mitch McConnell received $5,000, John Boehner received $7500, and Eric Cantor received $8,000. Only John Lewis, who represents the congressional district in which the Coca Cola Company is located, received more.

Moving Beyond Social Media - CMSWire

Social media still matters. But to make these initiatives work for your business and its bottom-line, you need to move beyond social media alone and focus on social business.

In February 2006, Forrester Research published a report titled ?Social Computing,? bringing the basic principles of sharing and collaboration into a commercial spotlight. In the report, Forrester recommended that companies ?abandon top-down management and communication tactics, weave communities into their products and services, use employees and partners as marketers, and become part of a living fabric of brand loyalists.? Social computing was more commonly referred to as social media and has always been about the people.

As social media evolved, we saw best practices emerge. Companies listening to unstructured consumer conversations to gain real-time insights. Employees humanizing brands by joining in discussions across channels. Activation of brand fans to help spread their passion for their favorite products and services, with consumer-generated advocacy complementing paid media placements. Anyone attending a marketing conference around this time was highly likely to hear stories about strange objects in blenders, photoshopped time lapse cosmetics videos, and a guy dancing on command in a chicken suit. By November 2008, I compiled a list of over 300 social media marketing examples; at the time, it was the largest list around.

According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, over 65% of online adults use social networking sites. Having the majority of the country?s population online and using some form of social media presents massive opportunity for brands ? and even bigger challenges for companies that aren?t prepared to engage. Over time, as more people began participating in social media, new issues emerged. Companies could engage directly, but should every employee be involved? Employees humanized brands by speaking their minds, but what if they were disgruntled? How can activity be measured in order to determine what matters?

Moving Toward Social Business

To address these issues, companies must move beyond social media and focus holistically on social business. Individual efforts need to be orchestrated as part of a scalable corporately-supported effort. The process of listening and response requires a workflow to accommodate multiple levels of response, with policy to guide content and tools to facilitate publishing, tracking, and analytics. Most importantly, companies need to have the desire to connect with their constituents and harness trends to drive profitable returns.

For the most part, the structural and cultural changes required to move organizations beyond social media to social business have been ignored by many companies. Why? Change is difficult. Branding is fun; infrastructure isn?t. There aren?t hundreds of great end-to-end social business case study examples. But that doesn?t mean companies should stand by idly and wait to see if social business is for real or not. Just as we saw with early social media examples, competitive advantage goes to those companies able to act decisively and incorporate what matters into their ongoing operations, while discarding what doesn?t.

Getting Started with Social Business

Getting started with social business starts in a familiar place ? after all, companies are made out of people. Brands need to start with culture, defining their shared values and beliefs, creating a strong core that supports authentic exchanges that are on point with brand goals. With the proper mindset in place, the organization should be designed to connect core constituents with consumers and prospects. The connections within the ecosystem will have strong and weak ties; a successful social business will have a continually expanding periphery. With standard protocols and shared services, brands can scale rapidly and successfully, managing stakeholder decision rights at various levels and driving economies of scale. Finally, engagement requires the use of the right tools for the right jobs. From consumer-level tools to emerging systems for sCRM, internal ideation, and big data analytics, businesses must upgrade and unlock the power of their people.

Bologna find sponsor to fund Bryant move - YAHOO!

Park Ji-Hwan, AFP/Getty Images

Bologna president Claudio Sabatini claims to have found a sponsor capable of funding a big-money move for NBA star Kobe Bryant on a short-term contract.

Bologna have offered the Los Angeles Lakers scoring guard $800,000 net to play in their first three home games of the new season.

And although Sabatini didn't reveal who the sponsor is, he said the money was there.

"We have a sponsor supporting us. It's an Italian company that's known all over the world," he said.

"We will soon have a meeting but I can't tell you any more."

Originally Bologna wanted to sign the 33-year-old on a short-term deal but due to the NBA lock-out they are also looking at an option for the whole season, according to reports.

If NBA teams and players don't find a resolution to their dispute and the 2011/12 season is cancelled, Bologna are looking at finding $5-million to bring Bryant to Italy.

"It's a huge gamble but I want to try right to the end. I'm an optimist even if there we're aiming very high," added Sabatini.

In any case, Bryant will be in Italy next week with his sponsor Nike, spending a day in Milan and another in Rome.

Bryant actually spent seven years growing up in Italy when his father Joe "Jellybean" Bryant moved there to continue his playing career having left the Houston Rockets in 1983.

"I don't think we'll have any news within the next week, not least because to finalise the contract, which will be like a bible, you need several days," added Sabatini, who is said to have received encouragement from Bryant's agent Rob Pelinka.

Bryant is a five-time NBA champion with the Lakers and was named MVP in 2008.

He has made the All-Star team 13 times, missing out only once since 1998.
