While its name might conjure images of cardboard boxes, the Chicago Moving Company has nothing to do with transport or storage. Rather, the modern dance ensemble's clever moniker refers to motion ? as in body movement and kinetic energy. And the collective takes its action-based claim to heart. Founded in 1972, CMC specializes in bold, aggressive styles and vibrant, daring choreography that largely owe to director Nana Shineflug's passion for mathematics, cosmology and the Far East. Her personal interest in the latter subject precluded an ongoing cultural exchange with the Arts Council of Mongolia, and a monthlong tour of its capital.
The company's travels also include appearances in Berlin, Mexico, and Brazil. Yet collaborations with the likes of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Oriental Institute and operation of the Hamlin Park field house theater give the institution a decidedly local feel. CMC provides outreach programs as well as inexpensive classes spanning fundamental dance instruction to tai chi. Like a majority of CMC events, the workshops occur at the Roscoe Village park's field house. The 1910 building, home to a black-box theater space that seats approximately 80 people, is reason enough to venture past the surrounding softball fields.
The Other Dance Festival is a curated celebration running through September. Featuring top dance artists ? from Matthew Hollis to Ayako Kato/Art Union Humanscape ? the shows offer a diverse array of performers.
