Would you make a lateral career move? - Chicago Tribune

While it's nice to think we'll leave our current job for a better opportunity, that's not always the case. In fact, in this economy, numerous employers of Company A may make a move to Company B, often for the same jobs. We wanted to know if you've made or would consider making a lateral career move. Here's what some of you had to say:

"I would make a move just to switch things up. I believe, at least for me, that a person needs to have a bit of a shake-up every once in a while to get the creative juices flowing again." -K.W., Norwood Park

"Not anymore. I've done that twice and been burned both times. I thought the grass was greener but it isn't." -R.L., Mokena

"I have never really planned that, unless the opportunity comes out of blue. Then I would try but just because I would see a chance to change the job and quit the one I have right now (for better, of course). I was always scared of transition (stop working at one place and go to another not knowing if I'm gonna fit in there)." -Bosko B.

"I made a lateral switch two times in my career. I almost immediately regretted the first one because the new people I worked with were complete jerks. It was such a hostile office that I went begging for my old job back after the first week. Of course, my old boss pretty much laughed in my face. The second time I switched jobs, it worked out well. More money eventually, better people in the office, better commute. You have to weigh a lot of things when you're looking to switch jobs." -Veronica W., Hinsdale

"I hate my job so much I'd take a couple of steps down the corporate ladder to get a new position. A lateral move would be a blessing." -D.B., Chicago

"I've done a lot of lateral moves but that's because I'm in security. I'm still moving. I'm just trying to find the perfect situation. When I find it, I'll stop." -Candice C., Libertyville

"I'm not giving up the job I have for one I don't know too much about. It's like the expression, 'the devil you know is better than the one you don't,' or something like that." -Marty, Lincoln Square

"I don't have a job right now. A lateral move for me would be going from watching TV in the living room to watching TV in the basement." -R.T., Wheaton
