Biofuel company moving HQ to suburban Philly - BusinessWeek

Gov. Tom Corbett traveled to suburban Philadelphia on Tuesday to welcome a biomass energy company that plans to move its headquarters from Georgia and create 150 jobs over the next three years as it tries to develop ways to turn products such as wood and waste into fuel.

Venture capitalist John Doerr moderated a discussion of alternative energy inside the warehouse building that Renmatix -- which has another facility in Kennesaw, Ga. -- will be calling home.

The company is developing ways to access the fermentable sugars that are the foundation of biofuels. The effort, along with other alternative energy efforts, are all part of helping the country become less dependent on foreign oil, Doerr said.

"Sugar is the next crude, the new crude," Doerr said. "Done right, this can revitalize the American economy."

The company's move, the development of natural gas drilling in the state and new wind and solar energy projects show that Pennsylvania is becoming a center of energy development, said Corbett, a first-term Republican.

Renmatix's processes, which use water to access sugars from biofuels, are an innovative part of finding new ways to create energy, Corbett said.

If Renmatix creates the number of jobs anticipated, the company will receive a total of $1.9 million in loans, tax credits and grants for the project, said Steve Kratz, a spokesman for the Department of Community and Economic Development.

Why Doesn?t Coke CEO Move Company To China? - Big Think

Maybe Mr. Kent needs to look at the reality of corporate taxes today in America:

2010 . . . 8.9%

Corporate Taxes as a Percentage of GDP

1955 . . . 4.3%

Every CEO in the country needs to remove the word ?uncertainty? from their vocabulary. It is a non-specific word that might mean anything, in the way that the word ?discomfort? could describe the kind of pain you feel when you have a cramp in your leg or the kind of pain you feel when you have a broken neck. In CEO speak, ?uncertainty? is a word that is usually delivered in an ominous tone when they are being interviewed, because we all know that CEO?s are being paid millions of dollars a year to assemble successful business strategies as simply and easily as kids snap together Legos.

What I do know with certainty is that the Coca Cola Co PAC has made its own contribution to congressional gridlock. According to Open Secrets, some of the Coca Cola PAC?s larger contributions during the 2010 election cycle were to the three in Congress most responsible for our current inability to get anything done. Mitch McConnell received $5,000, John Boehner received $7500, and Eric Cantor received $8,000. Only John Lewis, who represents the congressional district in which the Coca Cola Company is located, received more.

Moving Beyond Social Media - CMSWire

Social media still matters. But to make these initiatives work for your business and its bottom-line, you need to move beyond social media alone and focus on social business.

In February 2006, Forrester Research published a report titled ?Social Computing,? bringing the basic principles of sharing and collaboration into a commercial spotlight. In the report, Forrester recommended that companies ?abandon top-down management and communication tactics, weave communities into their products and services, use employees and partners as marketers, and become part of a living fabric of brand loyalists.? Social computing was more commonly referred to as social media and has always been about the people.

As social media evolved, we saw best practices emerge. Companies listening to unstructured consumer conversations to gain real-time insights. Employees humanizing brands by joining in discussions across channels. Activation of brand fans to help spread their passion for their favorite products and services, with consumer-generated advocacy complementing paid media placements. Anyone attending a marketing conference around this time was highly likely to hear stories about strange objects in blenders, photoshopped time lapse cosmetics videos, and a guy dancing on command in a chicken suit. By November 2008, I compiled a list of over 300 social media marketing examples; at the time, it was the largest list around.

According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, over 65% of online adults use social networking sites. Having the majority of the country?s population online and using some form of social media presents massive opportunity for brands ? and even bigger challenges for companies that aren?t prepared to engage. Over time, as more people began participating in social media, new issues emerged. Companies could engage directly, but should every employee be involved? Employees humanized brands by speaking their minds, but what if they were disgruntled? How can activity be measured in order to determine what matters?

Moving Toward Social Business

To address these issues, companies must move beyond social media and focus holistically on social business. Individual efforts need to be orchestrated as part of a scalable corporately-supported effort. The process of listening and response requires a workflow to accommodate multiple levels of response, with policy to guide content and tools to facilitate publishing, tracking, and analytics. Most importantly, companies need to have the desire to connect with their constituents and harness trends to drive profitable returns.

For the most part, the structural and cultural changes required to move organizations beyond social media to social business have been ignored by many companies. Why? Change is difficult. Branding is fun; infrastructure isn?t. There aren?t hundreds of great end-to-end social business case study examples. But that doesn?t mean companies should stand by idly and wait to see if social business is for real or not. Just as we saw with early social media examples, competitive advantage goes to those companies able to act decisively and incorporate what matters into their ongoing operations, while discarding what doesn?t.

Getting Started with Social Business

Getting started with social business starts in a familiar place ? after all, companies are made out of people. Brands need to start with culture, defining their shared values and beliefs, creating a strong core that supports authentic exchanges that are on point with brand goals. With the proper mindset in place, the organization should be designed to connect core constituents with consumers and prospects. The connections within the ecosystem will have strong and weak ties; a successful social business will have a continually expanding periphery. With standard protocols and shared services, brands can scale rapidly and successfully, managing stakeholder decision rights at various levels and driving economies of scale. Finally, engagement requires the use of the right tools for the right jobs. From consumer-level tools to emerging systems for sCRM, internal ideation, and big data analytics, businesses must upgrade and unlock the power of their people.

Bologna find sponsor to fund Bryant move - YAHOO!

Kobe Bryant
Park Ji-Hwan, AFP/Getty Images

Bologna president Claudio Sabatini claims to have found a sponsor capable of funding a big-money move for NBA star Kobe Bryant on a short-term contract.

Bologna have offered the Los Angeles Lakers scoring guard $800,000 net to play in their first three home games of the new season.

And although Sabatini didn't reveal who the sponsor is, he said the money was there.

"We have a sponsor supporting us. It's an Italian company that's known all over the world," he said.

"We will soon have a meeting but I can't tell you any more."

Originally Bologna wanted to sign the 33-year-old on a short-term deal but due to the NBA lock-out they are also looking at an option for the whole season, according to reports.

If NBA teams and players don't find a resolution to their dispute and the 2011/12 season is cancelled, Bologna are looking at finding $5-million to bring Bryant to Italy.

"It's a huge gamble but I want to try right to the end. I'm an optimist even if there we're aiming very high," added Sabatini.

In any case, Bryant will be in Italy next week with his sponsor Nike, spending a day in Milan and another in Rome.

Bryant actually spent seven years growing up in Italy when his father Joe "Jellybean" Bryant moved there to continue his playing career having left the Houston Rockets in 1983.

"I don't think we'll have any news within the next week, not least because to finalise the contract, which will be like a bible, you need several days," added Sabatini, who is said to have received encouragement from Bryant's agent Rob Pelinka.

Bryant is a five-time NBA champion with the Lakers and was named MVP in 2008.

He has made the All-Star team 13 times, missing out only once since 1998.

moving magnate tops yet another China rich list - The Guardian

By Jane Lee
SHANGHAI, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Forbes' latest ranking of China's richest people pits stolid industrial muscle against high-tech, with the head of an earth-moving company pipping the co-founder of the nation's biggest Internet search engine for the top spot.
Liang Wengen, the chairman of Sany Heavy Industry, came in at the top of Forbes Asia magazine's China rich list released on Thursday, a day after the rival Hurun Rich List also gave the top spot to the magnate, whose company makes earth-movers, pile drivers and concrete mixers powering the nation's urban transformation.
Forbes estimated Liang's wealth at $9.3 billion.
"This is a remarkable story of people growing up dirt poor in Changsha in Hunan Province, and from one group of people, getting seven of them on the Forbes China Rich List, including four billionaires," said Russell Flannery, a senior editor at Forbes who oversaw the compilation of this year's list.
Along with Liang, three other entrepreneurs associated with Sany are on the rich list: Tang Xiuguo, Mao Zhongwu of Xiang Wenbo. Liang, Mao and Tang were all founders of the company.
But Flannery said growing numbers of China's newly rich asked to be kept off the list, reflecting fears about the public jealousy and official scrutiny that wealth can bring in this country that is still run by a Communist Party.
Several once high-flying members of earlier rich lists have ended up in jail, including Huang Guangyu, the founder of Gome Electrical Appliance Holding Ltd , and Shanghai property tycoon Zhou Zhengyi.
"More people asked to be left off the list this year than in the last few years and I think it's a reflection in a bit of a sea change in Chinese society right now," said Flannery.
Other members of the Forbes top ten included Liu Yonghao, an agribusiness magnate, and several real estate investors.
Sany's success partly reflects the rapid growth of China's high-value added manufacturing sector over the past decade, with exports from makers of pricey machinery and construction equipment advancing faster than low-value goods like toys. Sany is based in Changsha, the capital of Hunan in southern China.
"We've seen a structural change in Chinese exports that started several years ago. If you look at the export compound annual growth rate from 2003-2008, you can see that low value goods are not growing fast -- usually single digit or at most low teens. High value are growing at 40-50 percent," said David Lee, a China-based partner with Boston Consulting Group, who specialises in industrial goods.
The company says it has over 60,000 employees and sales revenue of 50 billion yuan last year. Despite the gritty image of earth-moving equipment, the company also says it channels at least 5 percent of that revenue into research and development and has production plants in the United States, Germany, India and Brazil.
Forbes gave the second place to Robin Li, a founder of Baidu, China's dominant Internet search engine, who the magazine said had personal wealth of about $9.2 billion. Li could have snatched the top spot if it wasn't for the volatility of share markets in the United States, where Baidu is listed.
All in all, Forbes estimated that China's crop of billionaires grew from 126 last year to 146 now. (Writing by Chris Buckley; Additional reporting by Don Durfee; Editing by Nick Macfie)

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 20, 2011

Moving and Storage Company Gentle Giant Moving Company, an award winning local and interstate mover, today announced that revenues for its San Francisco regional operations, known in the Bay Area as Great Giant, exceeded expectations for the first six months of business. Aggressive goals were set for the regional office based on the San Francisco real estate market, competition from numerous other moving companies with established reputations in the area, as well as the consistent growth of the company's other West Coast Seattle Moving Company Gentle Giant in Seattle, Wash.

After formally establishing a local moving presence in the Bay area in February of 2011 with a branch on the Central Waterfront area of San Francisco, Great Giant has experienced steady growth in revenue and demand for its professional moving services. A strong local renters market combined with positive word-of-mouth have helped enable the company to increase the number of jobs, as well as the number of employees in the region. Great Giant Moving Company now employs 5 highly trained moving crew members and drivers.

The Boston based Gentle Giant has leveraged its highly successful long distance moving business with its desire to grow local moving service for Great Giant in San Francisco by working in tandem with Regional Manager Brandon Sparks on interstate moving jobs whenever the opportunity arises

"Although local moves are new for Great Giant in San Francisco," Sparks explained, "we have been working throughout this community for years via Gentle Giant's interstate business. Many folks in San Francisco know the GG brand, and the high quality service that goes with it."

The company's even growth and the spreading of its positive reputation and has been spurred by the strong internet user community in the San Fran area who frequently write about their positive experiences with Great Giant on popular review sites such as Yelp and Angie's List. In addition, the company has immersed itself in the community by becoming involved in events like the SharkFest Swim and the Escape the Rock Triathlon.

"I helped develop Gentle Giant's positive presence in Seattle," noted Sparks, "and the key is providing a superb work environment for our people. This allows us to focus on creating life-long loyalty in our customers, and I'm delighted that we have such a great opportunity for success in San Francisco."

Gentle Giant has been serving its customers with a blend of high quality care and speedy, athletic ability that differentiates the company in the industry. The award winning mover has operated for more than 30 years, but it was not until 2005 that the company expanded outside of New England. Its strategy in new regions is to start small and build a strong reputation by changing what people expect from a moving company.

"The mission of Gentle Giant is to create a positive experience through great service and to create growth opportunities for employees," said Gentle Giant Founder and CEO Larry O'Toole. "The company invests in solid, proven employees like Brandon and his team, and our customers benefit from that."

Would you make a lateral career move? - Chicago Tribune

While it's nice to think we'll leave our current job for a better opportunity, that's not always the case. In fact, in this economy, numerous employers of Company A may make a move to Company B, often for the same jobs. We wanted to know if you've made or would consider making a lateral career move. Here's what some of you had to say:

"I would make a move just to switch things up. I believe, at least for me, that a person needs to have a bit of a shake-up every once in a while to get the creative juices flowing again." -K.W., Norwood Park

"Not anymore. I've done that twice and been burned both times. I thought the grass was greener but it isn't." -R.L., Mokena

"I have never really planned that, unless the opportunity comes out of blue. Then I would try but just because I would see a chance to change the job and quit the one I have right now (for better, of course). I was always scared of transition (stop working at one place and go to another not knowing if I'm gonna fit in there)." -Bosko B.

"I made a lateral switch two times in my career. I almost immediately regretted the first one because the new people I worked with were complete jerks. It was such a hostile office that I went begging for my old job back after the first week. Of course, my old boss pretty much laughed in my face. The second time I switched jobs, it worked out well. More money eventually, better people in the office, better commute. You have to weigh a lot of things when you're looking to switch jobs." -Veronica W., Hinsdale

"I hate my job so much I'd take a couple of steps down the corporate ladder to get a new position. A lateral move would be a blessing." -D.B., Chicago

"I've done a lot of lateral moves but that's because I'm in security. I'm still moving. I'm just trying to find the perfect situation. When I find it, I'll stop." -Candice C., Libertyville

"I'm not giving up the job I have for one I don't know too much about. It's like the expression, 'the devil you know is better than the one you don't,' or something like that." -Marty, Lincoln Square

"I don't have a job right now. A lateral move for me would be going from watching TV in the living room to watching TV in the basement." -R.T., Wheaton

Island Moving Co. hosts interactive ?Open for Dancing? - Providence Journal

?Open for Dancing,? the biennial festival from Newport?s Island Moving Company, is back, with two days of site-specific performances taking place next weekend in prominent landscapes around the city. And the nice thing is anyone can join in, regardless of skill level.

This the fifth installment of the festival, which began 2002 and has attracted a ?who?s who? of choreographers specializing in site-specific work, said Island Moving Company?s Dominique Alfandre.

Besides the performances, which take place on Saturday and Sunday, classes in yoga, Qi Gong, and tai chi are being offered, along with dance master classes.

Ballroom dancing is on the lineup for Saturday afternoon, after which participants head for Long Wharf and dance the fox trot. Lunch is also provided, when you will have a chance to meet some of the artists.

The event brings together a mix of choreographers, musicians, professional dancers and people from the community, like the one woman who spent her days working on a computer for IBM and decided to branch out and try something new, said Alfandre. She signed up for the festival in 2006 and has been doing it ever since.

This year?s festival seems pretty tame compared to previous efforts, said Alfandre, even though one of the dances planned for next weekend takes place in a tree on Bellevue Avenue. Alfandre said in the past she has had to come up with a piano for a performance on a beech, and work with the Navy to stage a piece on an aircraft carrier at the base.

?We would do it every year,? said Alfandre of the festival, ?but it?s just too big. There are a million moving parts.?

This year, three choreographers have prepared dances. They will spend three days rehearsing with the dancers and musicians, from Wednesday to Friday, then put on three performances a day on Saturday and Sunday.

Perhaps the most unusual offering comes from Christine Sandorfi, who has prepared a piece that will be performed in an ancient beech tree on Bellevue Avenue. Sandorfi, who has danced with Island Moving since 2006, is something of a specialist with it comes to aerial dance. She helped create the aerial routines for the company?s spooky ?Dracula at Belcourt Castle.

Marta Renzi, who has worked in dance and film for the past 20 years, has designed a piece for the Yew Forest at the Norman Bird Sanctuary that will feature local musicians led by Mike Fishman.

Renzi, a Williamstown, Mass. native, has developed a reputation for staging site-specific dances in urban streets and public places, and she has been commissioned to create projects throughout the United States and abroad. Her film ?Porch Stories,? which documents a project using professional dancers as well as people from the community, was a finalist in the Moondance International Film Festival in Boulder, Co.

Zach Morris, a Bessie Award-winning choreographer whose output includes site-specific dance performance, as well as installation art, video and multimedia projects, will be using the newly refurbished Northeast Casemates at Fort Adams for his piece.

Morris, a frequent award winner, is a co-director of New York?s Third Rail Projects, which puts on dance projects in public spaces. He is also organizer and moderator of the New York City Dance Film Lab, and creator of the annual Steampunk Haunted House in New York City.

Alfandre described the work of both Morris and Renzi as ?very theatrical,? and involving a lot of set pieces and costumes.

About 65 people have signed up, she said, and all told probably 100 people will take part in the event, which will take place rain or shine. There is no way such an elaborate undertaking could be rescheduled for another weekend, said Alfandre. And besides, you can?t move these performances indoors, because they are designed for a specific outdoor spot.

Yoga classes are given mornings at 9 in Ballard Park and Queen Anne Square in the middle of town. And instruction in the ancient Chinese art of Qi Gong will be given at Purgatory Chasm in Middletown.

Participants pay $150 for the three days of rehearsals and the performances. The cost for students is $75.

West Palm Beach moving company Two Men and a Truck helps encourage kids to ... - Palm Beach Post (blog)

The Palm Beach County branch of the moving company Two Men and a Truck is taking part in a program to encourage Florida students to get healthy and active. As part of The Movers Club initiative, Two Men and a Truck is also collecting sports equipment for the local Boys & Girls Club.

The Movers Club encourages children to walk, run or ride 30 minutes each day and has set a goal to reach the 300,000 mile mark in one month. Local schools are welcome to join the program.

In addition to the extra physical activity, students and parents are encouraged to donate new or gently used sports equipment ? basketballs, baseballs, gloves and other items ? to Two Men and a Truck?s office at 4439 Westroads Drive in West Palm Beach.

?We?re taking a fun approach to an issue that has become very serious,? said Katie Rexrode, Two Men and a Truck media relations/communications manager, referring to the fact that childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years.

?With 23 locations across Florida, we felt if the franchisees pooled together we could make a positive impact on the health of our kids while reinforcing the programs at Boys & Girls Clubs at the same time. Even if it?s a small impact in our first year, it?s a move in the right direction.?

Two Men and a Truck will provide teachers and parents with instructions and an activity workbook to track time spent exercising (riding, running or walking).

Want to get involved? Please contact Emily Stebila at 616-233-0500 or email her.

Two Men and a Truck, the largest franchised moving company in North America, has more than 220 locations. In June, Two Men and a Truck of West Palm Beach was named Business of the Year by the Palms West Chamber of Commerce.

Machinists union claims to have smoking gun in Boeing 787 move to Charleston - KING5.com

SEATTLE - In the opinion of the Machinists union, it's a smoking gun: a series of internal Boeing documents presented in the second and third quarters of 2009 that clearly indicate the company was looking to build at least some of its airplanes without interference from the union.

Boeing does not dispute the legitimacy of the documents that are now part of the case brought by the National Labor Relations Board against Boeing. The NLRB accuses the company of breaking the law by moving some 787 production to a non-union plant in North Charleston, S.C.

The documents were meant for the eyes of Boeing's board and senior executives. In one, the company outlines its strategy as a "solution for establishing long-tem manufacturing capability outside of Puget Sound, starting with a second 787 final assembly line and progressing to the next new airplane program.?

Back-to-back strikes by the Machinists in 2005 and then again in 2008 played a role, to the point where the company said it felt hostage. But at the same time, the documents lay out the pros and cons, classifying the Charleston expansion as high risk, trading away the experienced-but-restive workforce in Everett against inexperienced workers in South Carolina. The move was also high cost ? about $1.5 billion.

But it will be up to an administrative law judge to conclude whether Boeing's move to South Carolina breaks federal labor law that bars companies from uprooting and moving existing factories just to avoid unions and whether an expansion to avoid unions constitutes the same violation.

In a statement, Boeing said, "...these documents confirm what Boeing has said from the outset; that we made a legitimate business decision based on a variety of factors, including the need to ensure our future competitiveness."

NACD Convenes Group to Move the Needle: Diversity and Women in the Boardroom as a Strategic Business Imperative - Yahoo Finance

Press Release Source: National Association of Corporate Directors On Thursday September 22, 2011, 9:30 am EDT

NEW YORK, Sept. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Highlighting their ongoing commitment to advance diversity in the boardroom, the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) and PwC co-hosted more than 120 corporate leaders to discuss opportunities for women in the boardroom on September 15 in New York City. The forum was the latest step in NACD's efforts to increase diversity in boardrooms across Corporate America.

"NACD is absolutely for diversity, absolutely for women on boards, and that's why we're here," said keynote speaker Barbara Hackman Franklin, chairman of NACD, director of Aetna, Dow Chemical and American Funds, and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce. "In order for boards to fulfill their mission and act as an effective, independent overseer of management, they must incorporate a range of perspectives and voices. NACD is asking all boards to make diversity a top priority because we know that business success depends on it."

The forum included a panel discussion on business challenges facing directors today, moderated by PwC's Mary Ann Cloyd, and a panel on the specific challenges facing women in the boardroom, moderated by Catherine Bromilow from PwC. There were also peer exchanges facilitated by members of the NACD Advisory Council on Diversity: Women in the Boardroom, and time dedicated explicitly to networking, as many attendees reiterated that these connections are invaluable to furthering NACD's diversity goals.

"NACD views diversity broadly?through the lenses of skill sets and experiences, from the perspectives of thought, background and communication style. Diverse insights are essential components to exemplary board performance," said Ken Daly, president and CEO of NACD. "At a time when companies are facing more challenges than ever before, having a wide range of opinions is crucial to developing innovative corporate strategies. We are grateful to our friends at PwC's Center for Board Governance for their support and contribution to this event."

The action-oriented meeting focused on defining next steps for NACD and four specific stakeholder segments?boards, women directors, institutional investors and search firms. To help move the needle particularly on women's advancement in the boardroom, some consensus was reached by leading and prospective directors who attended the meeting. Based on the premise that securing your first, or next, public company board seat is a combination of what you know and who you know, the following five themes were woven through the dialogue:

1. Network ? Meet with influential directors, fellow board members and management, including CEOs and the chairs of nominating/governance committees which oversee board composition.

a. Attend NACD conferences and forums such as:

i. NACD's annual conference in Washington, DC, October 2-4

1. See www.NACDonline.org/Conference for details

ii. NACD's Directorship 100 forum in New York City, November 8-9

1. See www.NACDonline.org/Directorship100 for details

b. Attend NACD chapter meetings throughout the year

2. Demonstrate your commitment to boardroom excellence and participate in boardroom education programs throughout the country and increase your personal value as a director.

a. Programs such as those mentioned above and

b. Become an NACD Fellow
